Did you know...?
When searching for patients in Guinea, volunteer nurses were surprised to find only 6 children with cleft lips. Amongst the 6,000 people waiting to be seen, they expected to see hundreds with this condition. Thanks to previous mentoring that took place on the Africa Mercy, over 323 surgeries have been conducted in the past 2 years by local surgeons:
“People have told me that doing any kind of mentoring in poor countries just doesn’t work – but I beg to differ. We are here in one of the poorest nations on earth and it is working. They are taking care of their own people. I’m very excited about that.” Dr. Gary Parker (Chief Medical Officer and Maxillofacial surgeon).
