His eyes filled with tears as he slowly moved his head for the first time in almost 20 years after his reconstructive surgery onboard the Africa Mercy. When he just was a toddler, a near-deadly fire left Modou with deformed hands and scarring on his face and neck that contracted as he grew up, preventing any movement. After 68-days of healing and hard work in physical therapy, Modou left filled with joy, hope, and love. “If the only reason we came to Senegal was for Modou,” said nurse Becca, “it was worth it.”
